How to Get Your Guest Room Ready for Visitors
Houseguests: you either love them or dread them. Either way, you’ve probably got a list a mile long trying to get your home ready to host your guests for a few days or even weeks. And with the holidays quickly approaching, I can venture a guess that you might have houseguests in your future.
But besides your home itself, let’s focus on the room they will probably spend most of their time in, the guest room. It’s not often that family ventures out to our part of the country to visit, but when they do, I try my best to make their stay in our home a comfortable and enjoyable one. So, take a peek at my to-do list when I am prepping for houseguests.
Let in the breeze
First off, let’s work on opening that window. Fresh air can make a world of difference in a room that may not get used often. Start by dusting the ceiling fan blades and light fixture, dust off the windowsills, and spray plenty of Windex on those windows. Next, take a feather duster and give your blinds a good shake. Once you’ve dusted everything off, open the windows and turn on the ceiling fan and let that fresh air in.
Not to state the obvious, but change the bedding
Strip the bed and start the washer, friend. Fresh, clean sheets are an obvious task when cleaning up the guest room. But think about adding an extra comfy blanket to the bed. Heck, you can even swap your bedding colors to align with the season, if you feel so inclined. Finally, freshen up your pillows with a lovely room spray.
Clean up!
A few items to note: vacuum the rug (or mop if you have hardwoods), wipe down any furniture, and clean out the dresser to allow for space for your guests’ personal belongings. Don’t forget to double-check for any items you may have tossed in there over the past few months because let’s just admit that sometimes the guest room becomes a catch-all room.
Finishing touches
Now, if you are like me, I love getting the works when I check into a hotel room. So why not give your visitors the same treatment. Put out some fresh flowers on the dresser and set aside a few extra blankets for extra comfort. You could definitely go the extra mile by providing extra toiletries, phone chargers, lint rollers, etc., but that’s optional.
Check the bathroom
If your guests are using a bathroom that your family doesn’t typically use, make sure you give it a once-over, so it’s ready to go. Put out extra towels, make sure the hand soap is filled, and for Pete's sake, clean that toilet. If your guests use a bathroom that is used by other family members, this would be an excellent time to put their towels on their bed instead of in the bathroom. Also, be sure to have a place to hang them when they are done.
Having houseguests doesn’t have to be stressful. But, by making sure they have their own designated space for their belongings, and a place where they can relax, will make their stay easier on everyone in the house.
