Magazine-Worthy Beds

The first thing most of us heard as we came running down the hallway as kids was, “Did you make your bed?” There was probably some bickering back and forth between you and your mother until you were forced back down the hall to escape being grounded.

Looking back, we should have all said, “Thank you for the reminder,” and just made the bed. As an adult, I don’t know about you, but my bed is my sanctuary. After a long day, it’s all I can think about to climb in bed and burrow myself under the covers. I’d be lying if I said it happens every day, but most days, we make the bed, putting the extra pillows, and throw blanket back in place.

Here we are as adults, trying to make our home Instagram-worthy, all while trying just trying to keep the ship afloat. To make this a little bit easier, you know, to make your bedroom look like it came out of a magazine, we’ve got a few tips for you.

There’s a lot that goes into making your bed, surprisingly. The basics are still there—sheets, comforter, pillowcases, and throw pillows. But let’s take it to the next level. After all, are you actually using that top sheet? Rumor has it millennials don’t even bother with it! *gasp*

Sheets and Pillowcases

Alright, back to that point on top sheets. Let’s ward off any fights, and just agree that you need both a fitted and a top sheet. If you want a more breathable fabric, stick with 100% natural materials such as cotton or linen. Flannel will have a rougher texture but provides added warmth during those cold winter months. Traditionally, higher thread count sheets yielded a softer feel, but that isn’t always the case anymore. On the topic of pillowcases, you can stick to the ones that come with your sheet set or opt for a silk pillowcase which is better for your hair and skin.

Duvet and Extra Blankets

Arguably, this is the most essential aspect of your bed. Did you know there are winter and summer duvet inserts? Since we live year-round in hot, humid weather, we prefer the summer duvet all year long and add in an extra blanket during the winter. Have you ever wondered why your duvet never looks as full and fluffy as the ones in a magazine? Pro tip: Your duvet insert should be one size bigger than your duvet cover. In other words, if you have a queen-size bed and a queen-size duvet, use a king-size insert for an overstuffed look.

Throw Blankets

Not only do throw blankets provide extra comfort, but they also bring the look of your magazine-worthy bed together. Some of our favorite blankets include fleece, flannel, knitted or crocheted, waffle, fringe, or mink. Any of these choices will pull in the vibe you are trying to go for in your home.

Throw Pillows

How many throw pillows do you need? The limit does not exist. But this should be done tastefully. The ideal number of throw pillows is somewhere between 4 and 7. Add dimension by changing up the size, shape, and design. A few pillows you can add would be basic square pillows, a skinny rectangular pillow, a round pillow, something with ties, a pop of color, and one that your dog will claim as their own. Just like the sneaky tip with your duvets, the same rule applies to your pillows. Always opt for a larger-sized insert than the cover.

Here are a few of our favorites pieces for that magazine-worthy look.
