What to Do with Unwanted Décor
I don’t know about you, but I’m in a season of cleaning, decluttering, and purging. It could very well be because Christmas and both of our kids’ birthdays happen within three months of each other—where I currently stand. I’m beyond grateful that our children are loved, spoiled, and showered with gifts. But they get and have a lot of STUFF. I’ve made it a point to regularly have them sort through their toys and pick out items that someone else might use more or could be excited to receive.
This method of decluttering helps take care of the kids’ section of the house. But what about the rest of our home? I’ve shared that I’m near the end of a refresh of our home. In the process, I’ve had to do some hard thinking when it comes to décor. In the spirit of decluttering, I’ve put together a list of ideas of what to do with unwanted décor.
Sell it. If the décor is in good condition, you may be able to sell it online or at a garage sale. Ahem. Facebook marketplace is a great avenue for selling (and buying) décor and furniture locally.
Donate it. Honestly, this is where most of our “cast-offs” end up. We live in one of the poorest counties in the state, and I’m thankful we have a handful of outstanding charities that make donation giving and distribution a sinch. The things we might just pitch into the trash are probably in better shape than we give them credit for and could be a blessing to someone else. Check out DropPoint if you’re not familiar with your local charity donation locations.
Upcycle or Repurpose it. If the décor has sentimental value or is made of high-quality material, consider upcycling it by repurposing it into something else. Maybe the item no longer fits your exact style, remember a little bit of paint goes a long way. A simple fix could make it perfect for your reimaged space.
Recycle it. If the décor is no longer usable, consider recycling it if it is made of materials that can be recycled. P.S. There’s also a whole movement behind sustainable design with less waste.
Trash it. As a last resort, if the décor is damaged or beyond repair, it may need to be disposed of in the trash.
Does it bring you joy and have a space still in your home?
