9 Best-Kept Secrets for Decorating Your Home This Fall

Best-Kept Secrets for Decorating Your Home This Fall

Today, next to Christmas, is a day we look forward to all year long—the first day of fall. For some, it still may not feel that way, be we’re officially in the season of celebrating crisp air, pumpkin spice lattes, cozy sweaters, and decorating our homes to celebrate the changing seasons.

We’re here to share our nine best-kept secrets for decorating your home this fall.

1. Let Nature Be Your Guide

Aside from the chill in the air, the colors that come with autumn are why we love this time of year. To recreate that cozy feeling in your own home, turn to hues found in nature. Rich rust, gold, copper, bronze, and even vibrant reds and yellows will help you tell the story of fall. When you’re shopping for glassware, don’t forget that mixing shapes, colors, and textures can add visual interest and dimension. The star of the show for fall is amber-toned glass.

2. Don’t Stick to the Rules

Just because most pumpkins are orange doesn’t mean they have to be. In recent years, pumpkins in shades of cream, aqua, and even coral are trending. If your local farmer’s market or store only has orange pumpkins—no problem. Paint and decorate your pumpkins to match your theme. That goes for shopping, too. You don’t have to stick to the seasonal shopping section when you’re on the hunt for fall décor. There are plenty of stylish items in other areas of your local home décor store that you can mix in with seasonal offerings.

3. Bundle Up

Extra blankets in your guest room or a basket by the fireplace are a must during the fall and winter months. But, think about using those cozy blankets in other ways. Drape your tartan works of art over chairs, benches, a display ladder, or even on your back-porch table. Too many throws? Turn one into an accent pillow and make all the difference in your autumnal vignette.

4. Let Your Tablescape Shine

Add extra seasonal charm to your home with a beautiful, over-the-top centerpiece. Start with candles as a go-to for creating a warm glow and intimate atmosphere. Give a nod to our favorite seasonal colors by filling bowls with fall fruits, like pomegranates, tangerines, figs, or grapes, and even switching to darker tableware. And speaking of darker hues, try candles in rich green, jet black, or deep oxblood with gold candle holders. If big isn’t for you, opt for a low centerpiece featuring a mix of herbs, flowers, acorns, and gourds. Here’s my go-to formula!

5. It's All in the Flowers

Swap out your spring and summer florals around your home for fall foliage. Incorporate loose leafy greens and branches for an organic, moody feeling full of texture and earthy hues. Even a few cut orange mums from your front yard can spruce up neglected corners in your home. Eucalyptus, dahlias, and ranunculus are favorites for fall arrangements, too.

6. Don't Forget About Your Floors

Whether it’s in your kitchen, living room, or bedroom, we can’t forget about our floors. Especially in the fall and wintertime, a warm rug can add dimension and ground your space. Multicolor oriental rugs are a favorite pick for adding rich tones and a vibrant punch.

7. Cozy Bedding

Swap out your sheets for layers of flannel, luxe merino wool, or even a faux fur throw to make your bedroom look and feel extra comfy.

8. When in Doubt, Hang a Wreath

We can’t get enough of beautifully decorated wreaths for every season. Take a peek at a few of our favorites here. Use wreaths to dress up doors, windows, a bare wall, or an empty nook in your home. Wreaths decorated for the season with fall foliage, feathers, or even pinecones will always breathe some seasonal life into your home. When you’re hanging, think outside a traditional hook. Clear hooks, over the door hooks, or coordinating ribbon can all be a beautiful way to display your wreath.

9. Set the Tone

Before guests even enter your home, set the tone of what they can experience inside right out on your front porch. Put into play the same rules for color, texture, and layering on the exterior of your home, too. Let your guests be greeted by pumpkins, outdoor floral arrangements, outdoor pillows, or even a fun buffalo check runner layered under your doormat.

Get after your decorating—fall is officially here. And, if you need any help, you know where to find us!
