Why is Home Décor Important?

Texas interior designer Saguaro West

Before this year, our homes were more or less a meet-up zone. The kids dropped off bags after school before jumping in the car to head out to football practice. Mom or dad ran home at lunch to turn on the crockpot or let in a repairman before zipping back to the office.

Not anymore.

Our homes are now our offices. Many of our children are attending school remotely, turning part of our homes into classrooms. We’re unable to get out and socialize at other friends’ houses or even bars and restaurants like we used to.

We’re going to talk about home décor reflecting our style, background, and personality. But, we also have to keep in mind that the element of functionality is even more critical than it was before.

  1. Make Your Home a Statement
Aside from the clothes you wear, your home is the definitive statement of your style as an individual, a couple, or a family. Whether you’re a fan of an industrial look, clean and modern, French country, or even rustic, that style is spelled out in pieces you pick out and display in your home.

  2. Let Your Home Reach its Potential
Just as we put on nice clothes and groom ourselves, the same principle should be applied to our homes. We have to help that space reach its potential. Home décor can help show off your home's unique architectural details or help make up for the lack thereof.

  3. Your Home is a Huge Source of Inspiration
You start and end each day in your home. It’s our source of comfort, relaxation, and inspiration. The décor in your home is all part of whether or not your home measures up. If you’re surrounded by drab décor that you’ve never been a fan of, it’s hard to curl up with a cup of coffee and enjoy the view. Am I right?

  4. Your Home Should Be Welcoming
This one hasn’t been as relevant in 2020, but it once was, and it will be again someday.Your home décor helps set the stage in welcoming guests. It’s important to focus on how your family will utilize your home and how your guests will, too. Furniture, accessories, and placement create an inviting and comfortable space for your guests, encouraging conversation and entertainment.

  5. Upgrade and Redecorate
We’ve all been in that phase of life where the sofa we have is there because someone gave it to us when we first got out of college (and it might still be there—something we’re definitely going to talk about more another day). The point is that the furniture and décor in our homes become worn down and faded over time. Your tastes and life stages also change. Just like we get new tires on our car, it’s important to replace and change out the décor in our homes, too.

Bonus: Declutter

This one we’re going to take a deeper dive into another day as well. Use redecorating your home as a chance to get rid of junk. Plain and simple. When we live in the same house long enough, we accumulate more and more things—often to the point we don’t realize how much we have. Take time to go through and discard items you no longer need, no longer bring you joy, or no longer fit your style.
